Rabat – Israeli defense officials confirmed that Israel was responsible for the airstrike near the Jabaliya refugee camp in Gaza, which killed five Palestinian children, Haaretz reported on Tuesday.

Immediately following the attack, Israel did not blame any party for the airstrike, although some officials blamed Islamic Jihad for another nearby raid that killed eight people.

The Israeli military had also insisted that it did not carry out any operations in the area.

Israel carried out a military operation in Gaza in early August, calling it a “preemptive operation.” It ended up killing 49 Palestinians, including seventeen children with ages ranging from 4 to 17 years old.

Defense for Children International says more than 2,000 children have been killed by the Israeli military and settlers since the year 2000, which marked the second Intifada.

Although the Israeli operation in Gaza was supposed to continue for a full week, with officials dismissing the possibility of a peaceful resolution, an Egypt-mediated truce was quickly agreed upon and entered into effect.

While military operations in Gaza are not a new occurrence, tensions between Israel and Palestine have seen some escalation this year, with the former carrying out several raids on Al Aqsa mosque during Ramadan, as well as killing Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.

The attack also brought repeated criticism of the low quality of life in the Gaza strip, which has been under a blockade from both Egypt and Israel, preventing daily life necessities from entering the region.
