A fire in a church in Giza, near Egypt’s capital Cairo, killed at least 40 people on Sunday.
Security services said at least 45 people sustained injuries due to the fire that broke out during a mass on Sunday.
Reporting about the unfortunate event, Reuters quoted security sources who said that an electrical fire broke out at the Coptic Abu Sifin church, whose entrance was blocked due to the blaze.
The incident caused a stampede. Most of the victims of the fire were children.
Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi has offered his condolences to the families of the victims in a tweet.
“I offer my sincere condolences to the families of the innocent victims that have passed on to be with their Lord in one of his houses of worship,” he said.
A church goer said that people were rushing to go down the stairs when they saw smoke coming from the second floor.
People started falling on top of each other while trying to escape, added the churchgoer.
