Rabat – The Republic of Chad announced on Wednesday the forthcoming opening of its general consulate in Dakhla, southern Morocco.

Chad informed Moroccan authorities of its decision through a verbal note, said a statement from the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, adding that the Chadian government’s note underlined the fraternal relations between King Mohammed VI and the Chadian president, President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno.

“The decision of this brotherly African country confirms and reflects the quality of bilateral ties through its support for the sovereignty of the Kingdom over its Sahara, its territorial integrity, and its national unity,” the ministry added.

Twenty-seven countries in Africa and from across the world have to date cemented their support for Morocco’s territorial integrity by opening consulates in the southern Moroccan cities of Laayoune and Dakhla.

The latest opening was on August 31, when Cape Verde inaugurated its general consulate in Dakhla, which now hosts 15 consulates general. Meanwhile, Laayoune is home to 12 other diplomatic representations.
In a speech on August 20, King Mohammed VI thanked all countries that have opened consulates in the southern regions as well as states that have expressed support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over Western Sahara.

“Nearly thirty countries have opened consulates in our southern provinces, thereby confirming their clear support for the Kingdom’s territorial integrity and the Moroccanness of the Sahara,” the King said, calling on all traditional and new partners of the kingdom whose positions on the Sahara dispute are “ambiguous” to clarify their stances.
“With these positive developments in mind – which concern states from all continents – I would like to send out a clear message to everyone: the Sahara issue is the lens through which Morocco looks at the world. It is the clear, simple benchmark whereby my country measures the sincerity of friendships and the efficiency of partnerships,” he stressed.
