Rabat – The US State Department announced today that diplomat Puneet Talwar is its new ambassador to Morocco.
The department tweeted today that the Senate confirmed Talwar as the next ambassador to Morocco.
“Our partnership with Morocco is critical for regional peace, security, and prosperity.”
The announcement came a few years after the departure of David Fischer in January 2021.
David Fischer, as part of the outgoing Trump administration, departed Morocco after the inauguration of Joe Biden as the new president of the US.
President Biden proposed Talwar as the new nominee last March.
The new ambassador to Morocco has a rich portfolio in diplomacy. The diplomat is currently a senior adviser to the State Department, with an April statement by the department describing him as “an experienced policy professional who has held senior national security and foreign policy positions in the State Department, White House, and United States Senate.”.
The new ambassador has also served as the Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs, Special Assistant to the President, Senior Director at the National Security Council and Senior Professional Member of the Committee on US Senate’s Foreign Relations.
Morocco and the US share strong diplomatic ties. Cooperation between the two countries was further strengthened after the US decision to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.
Former President Donald Trump announced a proclamation to support Morocco’s territorial integrity, a decision that was later upheld by the Joe Biden administration.
