Rabat – The French embassy in Morocco congratulated Moroccan students Ziad Oumzil and Ahmed Chehlaoui for their outstanding performance at the 2022 International Mathematics Competition (IMC) for University Students.

Oumzil, who is a first-year student at the Ecole Polytechnique in France and the Vice President of the Math&Maroc training department, won a gold medal at the competition. Meanwhile, Chahlaoui, who is also a first-year student at the Ecole Polytechnique, clinched a silver medal.

“Congratulations to Moroccan students Ziad Oumzil and Ahmed Chahlaoui, from the Engineering Cycle [Ecole] Polytechnique of the X2021 promotion,” the embassy said on Twitter.

Organized by the University College London, this year’s IMC took place between August 1 and 7 at the American University in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria. Over 600 university students from the top global universities participated in the competition, which is one of the most prestigious international mathematics tournaments.

“We are very proud to announce that the four medalists are all members of the Math&Maroc association,” said Math&Maroc association last month. In addition to Oumzil and Chahlaoui, Issam Tauil and Aymane Maaitat won a silver and a gold medal respectively.

Tauil, who is a third-year student at the Ecole Polytechnique, is the coach of the Moroccan national mathematics team. He won a gold medal during his participation in the previous edition of the IMC.

The association celebrated the ‘champions’ win and wished them success in their studies, as well as in future competitions.

The Ecole Polytechnique, commonly known as Polytechnique or l’X, is one of the most prestigious and elite schools in France. French mathematician Gaspard Monge established the school in 1794. Moroccan students represent the second largest population of foreign students at the school.
