Rabat – King Mohammed VI expressed his condolences to the family of Aicha Chenna, a veteran Moroccan activist who died on Sunday.
In his message, the King conveyed his “deep sorrow and emotion,” expressing his condolences to the family of the deceased as well as her friends and admirers.
The King recalled Chenna’s efforts in defense of collective action and human rights in Morocco, stressing that the activist devoted her life to helping Moroccan women and defending their rights.
He also saluted the advocate’s “great qualities, her sincere patriotism, and her spirit of activism and humanism.”
Chenna, who died on Sunday in Casablanca, is remembered by the many women and NGOs she helped.
Known as “the Moroccan Mother Teresa” by her admirers, the activist launched several initiatives to empower women, particularly single mothers.
Among her initiatives is the “Solidarite Feminine” (Female Solidarity) association, which offers three-year vocational training courses, including catering, hairdressing, and beauty care.
The association provides legal advice and members who are single mothers can receive childcare.
During her lifetime, Chenna received several awards, including the World Bank’s Global Partnership for Social Accountability Award in the MENA region in recognition of her active contribution to promoting social accountability in Morocco in 2015.
