King Mohammed VI Offers Condolences to Houssein Miloudi’s Family

Rabat – Moroccan King Mohammed VI offered his condolences to the family of the late Moroccan painter Houssein Miloudi on Saturday, noting that he learned of the celebrated artist’s passing with “profound emotion.”

The monarch expressed “deep condolences and sincere compassion following the death of one of the greatest painters of our country who, thanks to his distinguished talent and refined art, has enriched the artistic scene,” Morocco’s news agency reported.

The king called Miloudi’s works “creative and pictorial” and said they deservedly treasured both in Morocco and internationally.

Houssein Miloudi died on Thursday at 73 years of age, after a long battle with illness. He was considered one of the most notable Moroccan names in the world of art, with his collections having been featured all around the world, and at prestigious locations in the US and Europe.

In 2004, King Mohammed VI awarded the painter with the Royal Decoration (Wissam) for Intellectual Merit.

Since his first exhibit in Marrakech in 1968, Miloudi fused modern art styles with traditional Moroccan motifs, using writings on Msid tablets (stone tablets) and symbols such as protection from the evil eye as motifs in his art.

He lived and worked in Essaouira, the city where he was born in 1945.
