Rabat – A delegation of Belgian parliamentarians said on Saturday that they were impressed by the remarkable development in the Laayoune Sakia El Hamra region in southern Morocco.
The delegation of MPs arrived in Morocco earlier this week to discuss bilateral cooperation with senior Moroccan officials.
During their visit to the southern provinces, the MPs expressed satisfaction with development projects and political reforms Morocco has undertaken in the southern region to upgrade the region’s living standard and boost socio-economic activities.
The head of the delegation, MP David Leisterh, commended the quality of the projects in Laayoune as well as the job creation infrastructure that “meets the challenges of the region.”
The delegation met with elected officials in the region, including the president of the municipal council, Moulay Hamdi Ould Errachid.
The Moroccan official stressed that the visit of the Belgian delegation served as an opportunity to explore not only the development projects but also the climate of peace and security in the Laayoune region as well as the efforts Morocco has been making to strengthen basic infrastructure.
The delegation visited several infrastructures and projects, including the University Hospital Center, the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, the media library, and the women’s club and sports facilities.
On Friday, the Belgian delegation met with Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs to discuss the need to consolidate bilateral cooperation and to boost economic ties.

“It’s important for us as Belgians and Brussels residents to come here, to see what ties we can strengthen and what bridges we can build economically, socially, and environmentally between two countries that have a long history of friendship,” David Leisterh told the press after Friday’s meeting.
