Rabat – UNESCO on Friday, September 2, announced that the Moroccan cities Marrakech and Ifrane will join its Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC). UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, has now designated the two cities in Morocco as “learning cities.”
The UNESCO Learning City designation means that Ifrane and Marrakech will be part of a network that promotes life-long learning, from traditional schooling, to self-development and learning in the workplace.

As Learning Cities, Marrakech and Ifrane are now required to “mobilize [their] resources in every sector to promote inclusive learning from basic to higher education,” UNESCO said.
Furthermore, the designation means the two cities will aim to ensure learning in families and communities, learning in the workplace, use modern “learning technologies,” improve the quality of learning and “foster a culture of learning throughout life,” UNESCO explained on its GNLC website.
The statement emphasized that “lifelong learning lays the foundation for sustainable social, economic and environmental development,” a goal UNESCO shares with the Moroccan government, which has made these principles fundamental to its development approach outlined in its New Development Model.
