Casablanca – Guatemala announced on October 3 that it will open its consulate in Morocco’s Dakhla in November, reaffirming its support for the kingdom’s Western Sahara Autonomy Plan.
“I am in Morocco today to prepare for the visit of our Foreign Affairs minister to the Kingdom next month when he will inaugurate our Consulate in Dakhla,” said the Guatemalan Deputy Foreign Minister Ava Atzum Arevalo Tribouillier de Moscoso in a meeting with Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita in Rabat.
“We fully support Morocco and its autonomy initiative in the Sahara, which we consider the only solution to this dispute,” the deputy minister added.
“We know that Morocco is a country with great potential. That is why we will open a Consulate General of our country in Dakhla,” she continued.

Guatemala initially announced its decision to open a consulate in Dakhla on September 23.
The decision came after the meeting between the Guatemalan Foreign Affairs Minister Mario Bucaro Flores and his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita on the sidelines of the 77th UN General Assembly.
“For us, the concepts of sovereignty, peace, and territorial integrity are very important. We support Morocco’s position on this issue and we will continue to support Morocco forever,” the Guatemalan diplomat said.
With over 50 years of diplomatic ties linking the two countries, Guatemala was one of several Latin American countries to voice support for Morocco’s territorial integrity.
In 2019, the country affirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as the most “realistic, credible, and serious” solution to the Western Sahara dispute.
Over the past few years, several countries have opened diplomatic missions in Morocco’s southern provinces, strengthening support for the kingdom’s sovereignty over the Sahara.
The increased recognition comes as part of Morocco’s accelerated diplomatic efforts to garner support for its Autonomy Plan.
