Rabat – Global tourism leaders celebrated this weekend four Moroccan hospitality establishments, during the World Travel Awards Africa & Indian-Ocean Gala Ceremony 2022 held in Nairobi, Kenya.

Three of the awarded establishments are based in Marrakech including Africa’s leading luxury resort The Oberoi Marrakech, the leading new hotel Pestana CR7 Marrakech, and the leading luxury hotel villa Grand Riad at Royal Mansour Marrakech.

In addition to the three hotels and resorts, Mazagan Beach and Golf Resort was named Africa’s leading casino resort.

On Sunday, 400 industry leaders and media representatives from 25 countries attended the awards ceremony at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC).

Commenting on the event, the Founder of World Travel Awards (WTA) Graham Cooke said that “WTA had the privilege of recognizing the region’s leading lights as the industry marked its triumphant return in style.”

Cooke noted that the winners “have helped to once again raise the bar” as they have served as “stellar examples of tourism excellence.”

With four Moroccan hospitality establishments featured in the continental awards, Morocco is reaffirming its position as a leading tourism destination.

Despite the economic losses recorded over the two-year-long border closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Morocco’s tourism sector has recently shown signs of significant recovery with the sector reporting a 70% rebound compared to 2019-levels.

The country has also restored its popularity among traditional markets such as France, Spain, and Belgium while building new partnerships with operators in new markets such as Germany to promote the country as a global travel destination.

Morocco’s efforts to revive the tourism and hospitality sector appear to be working as the country welcomed 3.4 million tourists in the first half of 2022, according to data shared by Minister of Tourism Fatim-Zahra Ammor.

Earlier this month, Conde Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards named Morocco the 15th most popular travel destination in 2022.

The nomination followed the ranking of La Mamounia Hotel in Marrakech as the best hotel in North Africa for a second consecutive year by the same magazine.

The ranking also featured The Oberoi Marrakech, Mandarin Oriental Resort, Kasbah Tamadot, and La Maison Arabe. The four locations were among the nine Marrakech-based hotels mentioned in the list of top 10 hotels in North Africa.
