Rabat – Lear, an American company specializing in the manufacturing of seats, electric components, and electronic systems for cars inaugurated today a new plant in Meknes.

The inauguration took place with the presence of Morocco’s Industry and Trade Minister Ryad Mezzour, and the Wali (governor) of the city of Meknes Abdelghani Sabbar, according to converging news reports.

The factory was constructed under a budget cover of MAD 200 million ($18.2 million) and covers an area of 54,000 square meters, including 18,200 square meters dedicated to production activities, reports notes, adding that the factory would also produce wiring for electric cars.

Regarding the social impact of the plant, reports predict that it would create 2,000 direct jobs, with 600 additional jobs set to be added by 2023.

Speaking on the backdrop of the inauguration, Mezzour said that Morocco’s industry “continues to attract and retain world leaders in the automotive sector.”

The minister added that “this dynamic is consolidated today with the inauguration of the new plant of the Lear group, which once again renews its confidence in the Moroccan industrial platform and comes to meet the strong demand of the national automotive ecosystem whose performance needs not be proven.”

Lear first debuted in the Moroccan market in 2003. The American manufacturer currently operates plants in Rabat, Kenitra, Tangier, and Meknes, making it one of the largest job creators in Morocco. The company employs 18,000 workers across all its activities in Morocco.

The group also operates an engineering center in Rabat that employs over 250 engineers.
