Rabat – Interpol’s Director of Anti-Terrorism Greg Hinds commended Morocco’s counterterrorism efforts on the sidelines of the World Congress on Chemical Security and Emerging Threats which opened in Marrakech on October 24.

“We have worked with Morocco for years and are very impressed with the capabilities that have been put in place, not only to strengthen national responses, but also to respond to threats in the region,” Hinds told the press.

The security official stressed Morocco’s “leading” counterterrorism role in the region, reiterating Interpol’s commitment to deepening its collaboration with Morocco.

Commenting on the ongoing congress, which is running until October 27, Hinds said that the meeting aims to discuss important issues to promote chemical safety.

“We are fortunate to bring together more than 230 participants from 73 countries to discuss means to address the growing threat of chemical terrorism and bombings to global peace and security,” Hinds concluded He stressed that the congress will examine the evolution of threats and propose concrete solutions to solve challenges.

Morocco has been intensifying efforts against extremist threats, vowing more strengthened international cooperation as part of its commitment towards regional peace.

Morocco works with different intelligence services across the world as part of its counterterrorism approach.

In August, the North African country helped Spain arrest two terrorists believed to be members of extremist organizations in Spain and Austria.

Earlier this month, Morocco’s security services and Spain’s intelligence services worked jointly to dismantle an ISIS-affiliated terrorist cell operating in Nador in the Oriental region in Morocco and in the Spanish enclave of Melilla.

Morocco has been a member of Interpol since 1957. Interpol also has an office in Rabat.
