Rabat – Representatives from Morocco and Germany held a new round of negotiations in Berlin on October 18 and 19, with the aim of strengthening diplomatic ties and boosting cooperation between Berlin and Rabat.
The meeting was an opportunity for the two parties to praise the developing ties between the two countries, as well as stress the importance of establishing a “multidimensional partnership looking to the future between Morocco and Germany,” indicated Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The high-level Moroccan delegation was led by the Director of European Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Redouane Adghoughi, while the German delegation was led by Christoph Rauh, the Africa Director at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
The German delegation reiterated its support for Morocco’s socio-economic reforms in light of the New Development Model and advanced regionalization.
In addition, the two parties hailed Germany’s position in regard to the Western Sahara dispute, which endorses Morocco’s Autonomy Plan and considers it the most “serious and credible” basis to reach a lasting resolution.
In May 2021, Morocco recalled its ambassador to Germany for consultations due to rising diplomatic tensions between Rabat and Berlin. Morocco’s move was a response to Germany’s stance on the Western Sahara dispute.

However, diplomatic ties between the two nations experienced a turning point by the end of 2021 after Germany’s new government expressed its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a viable solution to resolve the Western Sahara dispute.
Last August, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita received his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock. The two officials discussed their countries’ vision to improve ties and boost cooperation in several fields, including renewable energy and trade.
“Morocco is perfectly placed to become an important strategic pillar in the European energy transition,” Baerbock said, stressing her country’s commitment to exploring investment opportunities in Morocco.
