Rabat – British Prime Minister Liz Truss announced that she will resign amid economic turmoil.

The British PM made her statement on Thursday, saying that the decision is due to her inability to fulfill the promises she made when she was running for the position with the Conservative Party.

“I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party,” Truss said. “I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.”

As Britain continues to cope with dire financial circumstances, an energy crisis and the coming winter months mean poorer citizens may not be able to pay their energy bills. Truss was subject to criticism for failing to effectively address those issues.

The decision came just 45 days after her appointment, making her the shortest-lived prime minister in the country’s history.

Truss will, however, remain as prime minister and leader of the Conservative party until the appointment of a new candidate for the position.

According to the BBC, many MPs have called for Truss’ resignation.

Miriam Cates, a member of the Conservative Party, told the BBC that Truss’ position as a prime minister seems “unstable.”

Truss had secured over 80,000 votes out of the 172,0000 accounted for at the UK Conservative party ballots in September.

Truss’s appointment came after former PM Boris Johnson stepped down as party leader and PM after support for him fell among conservative MPs.
