Rabat – The Kingdom of Jordan reaffirmed at the United Nations headquarters in New York its support for Morocco’s “serious and credible” Autonomy Plan for the Western Sahara region.
“Jordan welcomes the positive adherence of brotherly Morocco to its efforts in finding a definitive and a compromise solution to the Sahara issue through the Autonomy Plan initiative,” affirmed Ambassador and Jordan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Mahmoud Daifallah Hmoud.
Morocco’s Autonomy Plan is an initiative that aligns with the relevant resolutions of the Security Council and the UN General Assembly, he added in front of the members of the UN General Assembly’s fourth committee.
The Jordanian ambassador thus reaffirmed his country’s support for the Autonomy Plan as “serious and realistic,” while taking into account the specificities of the region.
Hmoud also highlighted Morocco’s efforts aiming to reinforce the development within the region, such as improving the living conditions of the locals, as well as dealing with the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hmoud also recalled Morocco’s compliance with the ceasefire agreement to preserve peace and stability in the region.
He also expressed his country’s support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy for Western Sahara Staffan de Mistura.
During a September meeting between Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita and Jordan’s chief diplomat Ayman Safadi, Jordan again expressed its strong support for Morocco’s diplomatic efforts to create peace in the region.
Bourita and Safadi committed to cementing the countries bilateral relations and to collaborate on promoting Arab solidarity.
Jordan opened its consulate general in Laayoune on March 4, 2021. Jordan’s inauguration represented the third Arab country to open a consulate in Morocco’s southern provinces after Bahrain and the UAE. The ambassador also expressed his satisfaction regarding the 29 existing general consulates in Laayoune and Dakhla, including that of Jordan in Laayoune.
Morocco is still continuing to gain international support for its 2007 Autonomy Plan, qualified by the UN Security Council in all recent resolutions as the most “serious and credible” to resolve the dispute.
