Rabat – Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn confirmed on Tuesday the forthcoming visit of a high-level economic mission to Morocco.

A joint statement issued after the meeting of Asselborn and his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita in Rabat stated that the upcoming visit will be led by Luxembourg’s Grand Duke Henri Albert Guillaume and the country’s Minister of Economy Franz Fayot.

While details on the visit are yet to be announced, it is expected to encourage Luxembourg-based companies to explore investment opportunities in Morocco in an effort to strengthen bilateral relations, as well as triangular Morocco-Luxembourg-Africa cooperation.

The Grand Duke of Luxembourg paid a similar visit to Morocco in September 2019, leading to the opening of a Trade and Investment Office (LTIO) in Casablanca.

Luxembourg’s aspirations to consolidate economic ties with Rabat were notably highlighted in a 2019 meeting with former Moroccan Minister of Industry Moulay Hafid during which Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister Etienne Schneider said that his country “aspires to make the port of Tangier Med its hub on the African continent.”

Economic ties play a key role in advancing the relations between Luxembourg and Rabat, as the latest data shows that Luxembourg’s exports to Morocco amounted to $12 million (MAD 130 million) in 2021. Meanwhile, Moroccan exports to the European country reached $6 million (MAD 65 million) in the same year.

In addition to discussing economic cooperation, Asselborn and Bourita stressed earlier today their interest in promoting mutual understanding to address regional and international issues, pursue peace dialogue, and fight against global terrorism.

The Luxembourg diplomat further welcomed Moroccan reformist efforts, stating that the North African country is an “essential partner” of the European Union in Africa as well as a “major contributor” to sustainable development in the region.
