Rabat – Morocco’s embassy in Ouagadougou established a cell to monitor the situation in Burkina Faso in the aftermath of a recent coup d’etat.

The embassy said that the cell seeks to stay updated and reassured about the situation of Morocco’s community in Ouagadougou.

“The embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco is closely following the situation in Burkina Faso and the events taking place there since Friday,” the statement said.

The press release also called on Moroccan citizens to remain home and “observe all vigilance,” stressing that the cell is currently tracking all updates in the country.

Morocco also mobilized an emergency number (+22606418080) for Moroccans seeking to learn about updates.

On Friday, military officers ousted Henri Sandaogo Damiba. Captain Ibrahim Traore accused Damiba of focusing on politics more than addressing security challenges.

The recent coup came eight months after a similar action from Damiba against Roch Marc Kabore in January.

Morocco’s national carrier Royal Air Maroc announced on Saturday the cancellation of flights to and from Ouagadougou amid the political crisis in the country. Today’s flights are also canceled, the carrier said, stressing that future trips might also experience cancellation.
