Rabat – Cameroon, and Switzerland will face off for the first time in this World Cup event on Thursday at Al Janoub Stadium in Doha, Qatar.
The match will take place at 11:00 Moroccan time. The World Cup draw placed both teams in Group G, which is expected to be a competitive group, alongside Brazil and Serbia.
Switzerland has a winning streak in all of their first matches in previous World Cup tournaments where they have remained unbeaten since they played Germany in 1996.
According to data from Opta Analyst, Switzerland’s national team has a 56.5% chance of winning the match, compared to Cameroon’s 18%. In spite of this, the data uncovered there is still a 25.5% chance that the game will end in a draw.
The Swiss team is hoping to reach the knockout stages of the World Cup, if they achieve this goal it will mark their third consecutive time, after Brazil in 2014 and Russia in 2018.
Cameroon first participated in the World Cup in 1982, the team’s most successful year in the global tournament was in 1990 when they secured three wins reaching the quarter-finals.
News outlet Reuters quoted coach Murat Yakin saying the Swiss team is the “best that ever existed.”
Cameroon has been off form following their success at the Africa Cup of Nations since the African team has only won one out of five of their most recent matches. The win was over Burundi, who currently ranks 141st.
Switzerland has qualified for the World Cup 12 times, Meanwhile, Cameroon has managed to qualify eight times including this year’s tournament, more than any other African country.
Considering Switzerland’s football manager Vladimir Petkovic accompanied the team for four consecutive international tournaments, it may seem surprising to see football manager Murat Yakin on the sidelines instead, who has now replaced former manager Petkovic.
