Rabat  – Algerian television channel TV 2 Algerie sparked controversy after only featuring the results of three of Sunday’s matches as part of the 2022 World Cup group stage.

The feature displayed on the television channel only showed the results of matches between Costa Rica and Japan, Croatia and Canada, and Spain and Germany, completely ignoring  Morocco’s 2-0 victory against Belgium.

Morocco’s performance against Belgium made international headlines on Sunday, with several media outlets highlighting the Atlas Lions’ outstanding victory against Belgian coach Roberto Martinez’ squad.

Spain’s Mundo Deportivo celebrated footballers Abdelhamid Sabiri and Zakaria Aboukhlal, saying that the team made a “historic victory for Morocco” against Belgium.

Marca, another renowned football sports outlet, also applauded Morocco’s performance, emphasizing that the “Atlas Lions are capable of blowing up any game.”

The Algerian channel’s decision to ignore Morocco’s victory against Belgium could stem from the country’s regime’s hostile approach against Morocco.

Algeria cut diplomatic ties with Morocco in August 2021, accusing the North African country of causing wildfires in the Kabylie region. The fires were triggered by the rising temperatures in Algeria last summer.

Morocco rejected the accusations, describing them as fallacies and unfounded allegations. The Moroccan government also regretted Algeria’s decision and emphasized its determination to continue to remain credible and loyal to Algerians.

Despite Algeria’s reluctance, Morocco has been calling on the Algerian regime to engage in a frank and direct dialogue to end the political stalemate between the two countries.

One of the recent dialogue initiatives was in July, when King Mohammed VI said that Morocco was ready to restore ties with Algeria.

“We assure the Moroccan people of our firm will to find a way out of the current situation and to promote rapprochement, communication, and understanding,” between Algerians and Morocco, the King said in his speech on the anniversary of Throne Day.
