Rabat – Morocco’s 2-0 win against Belgium on Sunday has triggered riots in Belgium and the Netherlands, leading to dozens of arrests.

The riots escalated from celebrations by Moroccan fans, following the Atlas Lions’ win, European press reported.

Fans torched and overturned cars, and set other vehicles on fire, reports detailed. One person suffered facial injuries.

Police had to deploy water cannons and tear gas to disperse crowds in Brussels and Antwerp, and two police officers were injured in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, but calm returned to the cities by Sunday evening.

“We still don’t know what the damage will be for the city,” Rotterdam police said on Sunday.

“These are not fans, they are rioters. Moroccan fans are there to celebrate,” Brussels Mayor Philippe Close said.

Morocco defeated Belgium, the second best team in the world according to FIFA, 2-0 on Sunday, solidifying their chances of going through to the 2022 World Cup’s round of 16.

With Belgium and the Netherlands being home to a large number of Moroccan migrants and people of Moroccan descent, it was no surprise that the win was widely celebrated in those countries.
