Rabat – Poland has defeated Saudi Arabia 2-0 on Saturday, as part of matchday 7 of the Qatar World Cup group stage.
Although the Saudi team put pressure on Poland’s defense, Piotr Zielinski opened the scoring for the Polish side in the 36th minute, taking advantage from an assist from star player Robert Lewandowski.
Salem Al Dawsari missed a vital chance to equalize the score towards the end of the first half, when he failed to score a penalty.
Lewandowski then widened the lead for Poland, scoring a second goal in the 82nd minute.
Saudi Arabia had managed to produce an upset in their first game when they defeated Argentina 2-1, playing a tactical match suited to their strengths.
Arab teams have enjoyed relatively positive performances for the most part in this World Cup, helped partially by an enthusiastic crowd, as the competition is held in an Arab country for the first time in history.
Poland tied in its first game with Mexico, making a win in today’s game essential to preserve their chances of advancing to the knockout stages.
For Saudi Arabia, a win would have secured it a spot in the second round, but even a draw would have meant going into the final game of the group stage in a great position.
Argentina will be facing Mexico at 20:00 Moroccan time at Lusail Stadium.
