Rabat – While having a pet can be a big responsibility, the reason pet ownership continues to be popular is because they add joy and happiness to owners’ lives and homes.
Animal lovers would naturally agree with that statement, but scientific studies and findings have also found benefits to pet ownership.
Interacting with animals has been shown to lower cortisol levels (a stress-related hormone) and blood pressure.
Studies suggest that interaction with animals can reduce loneliness and increase feelings of social support by providing companionship.
Caring for pets can help make one feel wanted and needed
According to the Waltham Petcare Science Institute, studies have reported that pet ownership has psychological, emotional, and even physical health benefits.
A study, led by Carri Westgarth at the University of Liverpool, looks into the hypothesis that pet dogs are associated with children maintaining a healthy weight and mental health.
The study shows positive potential associations between pet ownership and emotional, behavioral, cognitive, educational, and social development.
“Anyone that has grown up with, and loved a family pet intrinsically feels the value of their companionship,” said Westgarth. “The scientific evidence investigating the benefits to children and adolescent development looks promising.”
“Ultimately, this [evidence] will enable us to know more about how pets provide young people with emotional, educational, and social support,” Westgarth added.
Additionally, caring for pets can help make one feel wanted and needed.
Animals can give a sense of security and someone to share the day with.
Pets and people can form powerful bonds, as the animal companions become part of families and communities.
In Morocco, there are several animal shelters and associations for stray dogs, cats, mules, among other animals. These shelters aim to rehome and help animals in need in the country.
