Rabat – American menswear designer Todd Snyder’s latest collection came to be after he saw photos of American expats in Tangier in the 1950s. Taking inspiration from American expatriate author Paul Bowles’ time in Morocco, Todd Snyder chose the country as his inspiration this season.
He calls his latest work the Nomad collection, spring-summer 2023. The creation of the line started with a Tuareg rug, a traditional textile made from reed, palm, and camel leather to create geometric patterns.
“An American somewhere—that’s actually how I design my collections,” Snyder told US fashion magazine Vogue. Snyder says that he is designing for a dream of what is next.
The American designer shared an Instagram post revealing that he was looking at photographs of Tangier in the 1950s, and how he was inspired by the American expats who mixed their gentleman’s clothes with rustic and bohemian touches.
The port city in northern Morocco became the inspiration for the designer’s spring collection, which was made clear through the line’s relaxed silhouettes, desert-inspired color palette, and rustic prints.
“I have never been to Tangier, but that’s my next destination,” Synder said
The menswear designer noted that the new collection features more texture than any other collection he has produced, delivering the line in a way that mixes refinement and bohemian chic.
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the collection is how it embodies a relaxed, easygoing style. Despite the collection’s vintage inspiration, it maintains a culturally expansive style.
Todd Snyder’s decision to take inspiration from Morocco’s rich cultural heritage is not unique. Designers and brands across the world have been looking to Morocco for inspiration this year, including H&M, Kith, Zuhair Murad, among others.
