Rabat – Prince Moulay Rachid is representing King Mohammed VI at COP 27, the world’s biggest climate change event, which opened in Egypt on Monday.
Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the Moroccan Prince upon his arrival to Egypt, where he will represent the monarch during the working meeting of the 27th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Approximately 110 leaders from around the world are participating and will deliver addresses and speeches to emphasize commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The event’s agenda will focus on different aspects, including innovation, clean technologies, and water management.
Morocco’s government frequently expresses its determination to continue to work with international partners to tackle the climate change crisis.
King Mohammed VI recalled the importance of tackling climate change in October, stressing that the world is facing several serious challenges – particularly the ongoing water crisis.
“Morocco is not the only country facing the problem of drought and water scarcity. This issue has become a global phenomenon, one that is further compounded by climate change,” the King said during the opening of the legislative year at Morocco’s parliament in October.
The monarch also called for fresh measures to tackle the crisis, recalling that Morocco is now in a situation of chronic water shortage.
In addition to water management, the north African country is committed to continuing to strengthen its renewable energy approach.
By 2030, Morocco aims to produce 52% of its electricity from green energy.
A report from Morocco’s Economic, Social, and Environmental Council (CESE) said in 2020 that the country has the potential to produce 96% of its electricity using renewable energy by 2050.
Morocco invested around $5.2 billion in solar projects, the country is home to several sustainable projects including the Noor Ouarzazate solar complex which has been serving as an example of the country’s potential and assets in terms of renewable energy.
