Rabat – Morocco’s Atlas Lions today will lock horns with Group F rival Canada at the Al Thumama Stadium as part of the two team’s last group stage game at the ongoing World Cup.

Canada has already been eliminated from progressing to the knockout stage, and their last match in the World Cup is Morocco’s final chance to book a ticket to the next round.  The North African team is confident following their remarkable performance so far in the tournament, notably its win against Belgium.

Croatia currently leads Group F standings with four points, while Morocco comes in second place with four points. Belgium follows in third place with three points and Canada scrapes last place in the group.

Morocco’s opening game against 2018’s World Cup runners-up Croatia ended with a 0-0 draw, and their game against Belgium ended with a spectacular 2-0 victory. The Atlas Lions have yet to concede any goals during the ongoing tournament.

After Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, and host Qatar got eliminated from the World Cup, Morocco is the only Arab country with hope left to make it to the next round.

Predictions

Opta Analyst predictions showed that Morocco has a 46.5% chance of winning the game and securing three points, while the likelihood of the game ending in a draw stands at 26.2%.

“A Canada win should not be entirely written off though,” added Opta Analyst, indicating that the Canadian squad has a 27.3% chance of defeating Morocco.

Similarly, Sofascore indicated that 59.5% of voters predicted that the Atlas Lions would win, while 21.4% predicted that Canada would clinch a victory.

Sports website 90min predicted that Morocco will defeat Canada 1-0 and secure three points. Likewise, Sports Mole predicted a 2-1 win for Morocco.

Odds are in favor of Morocco, but Canada seems to be determined to redeem itself before going home.

Scenarios

The Moroccan squad would only need to win or draw against Canada to progress to the next round, regardless of the outcome of the game between Belgium and Croatia. But Morocco’s Head Coach Walid Regragui is adamant to gain a win against Canada while remaining reluctant to settle for a draw.

Regragui stressed that “playing for a draw would be a big mistake. We will play this match as we did in the previous ones, we will aim for victory once again,” he said.

“We will manage this match in the same way we did in the first two games, without paying attention to calculations,” he added.

But if Canada wins, Morocco would need Croatia to beat Belgium for the Atlas Lions to become the group runners-up, or for Croatia to lose by at least two more goals than Morocco.

Even though Morocco is confident ahead of the game against Canada, the latter is not necessarily an easy opponent. Today marks Canada’s last game at the World Cup, an opportunity for the team to put on a final show following their losses in the previous matches.

“This last game is about getting a result and winning for Canada, and really making this country believe that we’re in the right direction for 2026,” said Canada’s coach John Herdman.
