Rabat- Despite attempts to achieve gender equality in Moroccan society traditional values still prevail at home. A study found 92% of women are involved in housework compared to 24% of men according to Morocco’s High Commissioner for Planning (HCP).
HCP’s report explores the evolution of social relations between men and women in terms of time use in all of its dimensions, including time spent engaging in different types of activities, and sharing domestic responsibilities (housework, childcare, etc.)
The report found that women spend four hours and 17 minutes per day on household chores, compared to 38 minutes for men.
In particular, women spend three hours 51 minutes and men spend five minutes on housework including cooking, cleaning, and laundry.
In terms of the geographical distribution of the data, HCP’s report suggests that urban women spend four hours and 40 minutes on housework, while rural women spend four hours and 43 minutes.
The report further indicates that time spent on house chores varies depending on women’s social status. Housewives spend four hours and 36 minutes on housework, while employed and single women spend three hours 17 minutes, and two hours 52 minutes respectively.
According to sociodemographic data, 92% of women are involved in housework compared to 24% of men at the national level, 26% in urban areas, and 22% in rural areas.
HCP reported that men spend an average of 33 minutes per day on housework outside the home (such as shopping, paying bills, and administrative tasks), while women spend an average of 26 minutes.
According to the same report, the average amount of time allotted to accompanying children under the age of 15 to school stands at six minutes per day with (27%) of women participating in these tasks, 7% higher than men (20%).
The report’s data further indicates that the unequal distribution of domestic responsibilities is accepted by both partners, 87% of men and 85% of women are satisfied, with 11% and 12% respectively being moderately satisfied.
