Rabat – Four Moroccan students have distinguished themselves at the third edition of the Arab Mathematics Olympiad, winning a total of four medals including one gold, and three bronze.

Head of the scientific committee of the competition Taher Darqaa confirmed the news during the closing ceremony of the event on Monday, television network 2M  reported, indicating that student Yassir Abousir won the gold medal.

Meanwhile, Moroccan students Ayoub Abouhafs, Aymane Hajili, and Hiba Farchioui claimed the bronze medals.

Moroccan association Math&Maroc took to Linkedin to congratulate the four Moroccan students on their remarkable performance at the competition saying: “The third edition of the Arab Olympiad of Mathematics ended with the participation of a team of our students who won four medals, including a gold medal.”

Organized by the Arab Organization for Education, Culture, and Science (ALECSO), the competition saw the participation of 60 outstanding students from 15 Arab countries, including Morocco, Tunisia, and Oman.

The annual olympiad took place on December 15 and was held remotely via the video conferencing platform Zoom, added 2M.

Director General of ALECSO Mohamed Ould Amar stressed the organization’s commitment to establishing the competition as an “annual Arab educational activity,” with the aim of giving students from across the Arab world the opportunity to compete in a “distinguished scientific field.”

Amar said that the olympiad promotes mathematical, logical, and critical thinking among children and youth, which would in turn allow them to contribute to the development of their countries.

The regional competition also seeks to foster an interest in mathematics among students, as well as showcase and support their talent and knowledge in the field.

Founded in 1975, ALECSO focuses on promoting activities and events in a wide range of fields, including education, culture, science, and computer technology.
