Rabat- Morocco’s Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch said that the officialization of the Amazigh language requires the mobilization of the necessary financial resources.

Akhannouch made the remarks on the sidelines of the ceremony that launched projects aimed at strengthening the use of the Amazigh language in public administration, held on Tuesday, in Khemisset near Rabat.

“The political will to move forward in the implementation of this project would be insufficient without mobilizing financial resources to translate this ambition into reality,” Akhannouch explained.

Akhannouch recalled that the Moroccan government allocated a budget of MAD 200 million ($19.5 million) for the officialization of the Amazigh language in January 2022.

Additionally,  as part of Morocco’s 2023 Finance Bill, the government allocated a budget of MAD 300 million ($29.3 million) to the Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform to accelerate the integration of the Amazigh language in public administration.

The allocated budget will be gradually increased over the next few years until it reaches MAD 1 billion by 2025.

The government aims to implement the language on the official website of administration, public institutions, and local authorities through these initiatives, as well as to staff public administration with Amazigh-speaking receptionists.

Amazigh language will also be integrated into education, health, and justice, as well as cultural and media activities.

However, the officialization of Amazigh faces numerous challenges. The National Federation of Amazigh Associations (FNAA) recently published a report outlining the challenges that the Amazigh language faces in becoming an official language.

Morocco is reaffirming its commitment to law 26-16 on the integration of the Amazigh language into teaching and various spheres of public life in honor of the Amazigh New Year 2973.

On January 12, Amazigh people in Morocco and throughout North Africa will celebrate the Amazigh new year, Yennayer.
