Rabat – A bipartisan group from the US senate arrived in Morocco as part of its tour to the four Abraham Accords countries.

American news outlet Axios quoted Senator Jacky Rosen and James Lankford who are leading the Abraham Accords Caucus.

“My colleagues and I look forward to meeting with senior government officials, business leaders, and civil society organizations to discuss how we can strengthen the relationships fostered by the Accords and expand them to new countries,”  Axios reported Rosen as saying.

The US Congress formed the bipartisan Abraham Accords Caucus to promote cooperation and relations between the US, Israel, and Arab states.

Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita is set to hold talks with the delegation today in Rabat.

The delegation, which is set to visit Israel, the UAE, Bahrain, and Morocco, aims to strengthen ties throughout the “region through reconciliation and common pals,” senator Lankford said.

The visit announcement came just a few days following talks between high-ranking officials from Negev countries in Abu Dhabi.

During the talks, the officials stressed the importance of the Negev summit held in Israel in 2022 and vowed that the new summit meeting in 2023  will represent “another critical step in the advancement” of the forum process.

The summit seeks to further strengthen ties and cooperation between Israel and the Arab state signatories of the Abraham Accords.

Morocco is part of the countries that re-established diplomatic ties with Israel as part of the US-brokered Abraham Accords.

The two countries re-established relations in December 2020, vowing to strengthen cooperation at all levels, particularly trade, education, security, and technology.

Despite the re-establishment of relations, Morocco’s government has renewed its constant support for a two-state solution to end the Palestine-Israeli conflict.

The North African country also reiterated its unwavering support for the Palestinian cause and the legitimate right of Palestinians to enjoy an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

A recent report from Arab Barometer showed that 64% of Moroccans oppose the re-establishment of ties between Morocco and Israel.

Around 34% of surveyed Moroccans in the report said they “strongly” oppose relations between the two countries, while 30% others said they “oppose” it.

Another 23% of Moroccans reported that they are in favor of the re-establishment of ties between the two countries, while as little as 8% of them said they “strongly” favor the Moroccan decision to re-establish ties with Tel Aviv.
