Rabat – Morocco has denied allegations claiming that Rabat received a request for the expulsion of the perpetrator of the church attacks in Algeciras, Spain.
An investigation “made it possible for us to be sure that no request for expulsion or request for an opinion on the person concerned had been received,” Moroccan news outlet Le360 quoted an authorized source as saying.
Moroccan suspect Yassine Kanjaa is facing charges for killing a Sacristan and injuring a priest in Spain’s Algeciras.
Following the attacks, Morocco has been receiving criticism from Spanish news outlets and politicians, who claimed that a deportation order was issued against the perpetrator in June of 2022.
Spanish journalist and a former El Pais correspondent Ignacio Cembrero publicly accused Morocco of ignoring the deportation order against the suspect.
“Five days after the attack on Algeciras, the Consulate of Morocco finally condemns the criminal attack …and expresses its regret,” he wrote.
The source quoted by Le360, however, denied the reported allegations, stressing that “no request for the deportation of the person concerned from the Spanish authorities has been addressed.”
The suspect is still in custody pending investigations to determine the circumstances of the case.
