Rabat – The FIFA Club World Cup draw has put Morocco’s AC Wydad up against Saudi club Al Hilal in the tournament’s second round.
The draw took place on Friday at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Sale, near Morocco’s capital Rabat, and saw attendance from FIFA President Gianni Infantino and CAF President Patrice Motsepe.
Moroccan ex-footballer Noureddine Naybet and Director of FIFA Tournaments Jaime Yarza conducted the draw.
The tournament will kick off on February 1, with Egypt’s Al Ahly playing against Australia’s Auckland City. The winner will face American club Seattle Sounders in the second round.
Seattle Sounders have made history by becoming the first US team to ever qualify for the competition after winning the CONCACAF Champions League.
Brazil’s CR Flamengo will face the winner of the Wydad-Al Hilal match in the semi-finals.
The winners of the other second round match will face Real Madrid in the semi-finals. The Madrid club is the most successful in the history of the competition.
Morocco is hosting the tournament for the third time, after hosting it in 2013 and 2014. The announcement of Morocco’s hosting was made on December 16, during the 2022 World Cup.
The Club World Cup is an annual competition that gathers the winners of each continental confederation’s league tournament, to determine the best club team in the world.
The last title was won by English club Chelsea, who will not be participating this year since Real Madrid won the UEFA Champions League.
