Rabat – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Monday that the roadmap of relations between Rabat and Madrid established last April gives their bilateral cooperation “stronger pillars.”
The Spanish politician added that the new era of relations would strengthen “mutual trust,” during the seventh Conference of Spanish Ambassadors Accredited Abroad.
“The stability and security of our southern neighbors remains a top priority,” Morocco’s News Agency (MAP) quoted Sanchez as saying.
He went on to say that there are plans to organize a European-level summit to “develop the positive agenda we have with our neighbors to the south,” adding that the two countries are committed to dealing with common issues “with a spirit of trust and consultation.”
After close to a year of diplomatic tensions between Morocco and Spain, the two countries mended their ties in April 2022, with Sanchez visiting the North African country and meeting King Mohammed VI.
The move also included Spanish recognition of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan initiative for Western Sahara, after the European country had previously sheltered Brahim Ghali, the leader of the separatist Polisario movement.
The two countries pledged to strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest, such as immigration and trade.
