Rabat – Morocco’s Embassy in Ankara has mobilized to help members of the Moroccan diaspora in the country, following the devastating earthquake that has left more than 650 people dead in southern Turkiye and northern Syria.

The embassy announced in a statement released on Twitter that it is encouraging Moroccans living in Turkiye, especially in the affected southern region, to communicate with them through their phone numbers and email.

The embassy expressed its “extreme sadness and grief” on Twitter following the news of the deaths and injuries the quake left behind.

“On this sad occasion, the Embassy extends its most sincere condolences and warmest sympathy to the victims’ relatives and the brotherly people of Turkiye,” the embassy continued.

A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked parts of southern Turkiye and northern Syria early on Monday, killing more than 650 people with the death toll expected to rise.

The quake is the worst that the region has seen in decades, and was felt all the way to the Egyptian capital Cairo. In Turkiye, it is estimated that 1,700 buildings collapsed due to the quake.

Hospitals, which have also sustained damage, have reported that they are “overwhelmed” by the number of victims requiring medical assistance.

Several states and organizations, including the US, EU, Ukraine, and the UN, have expressed readiness to provide assistance to the states and populations affected.
