Rabat – Morocco’s Royal Society of Horse Encouragement (SOREC) is organizing the 12th edition of the Grand Prix of Africa in the Moroccan city of Marrakech, bringing together horse riders from across the continent.
The event will take place at the Marrakech racecourse on Saturday, February 25, indicated the organizers, promising a “prestigious and international equestrian event.”
The Grand Prix of Africa 2023 will be an opportunity for SOREC to showcase its expertise in the domain, as well as introduce Moroccan horse riders to Africa’s horse racing scene.
The 2023 edition marks the second time that the Grand Prix d’Afrique is organized on African soil, as the previous edition took place in Marrakech in May 2022.
Hosting the event for the first time in Morocco and Africa was a milestone for the entire continent, said Director General of SOREC Omar Skalli last year, stressing that it was an “opportunity to further enhance the presence of Africa in the field of sports and horse racing.”
Speaking of the significance of the event, Skalli said that the Grand Prix of Africa “plays a major role in the international influence of the African horse racing industry.”
SOREC organized the Grand Prix of Africa 2022 in partnership with the African Lotteries Association (ALA) and French gambling company Pari Mutuel Urbain (PMU).
ALA President Dramane Coulibaly celebrated the decision to host the event in Morocco, arguing that it would “further strengthen the ties of cooperation, solidarity, and support in Africa.”
“It is with pride and enthusiasm that we participate in the organization of this major event,” Coulibaly added.
A total of 12 African countries participated in the Grand Prix of Africa 2022, in addition to several representatives from European countries.
