Rabat – The Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity has announced its operation to ensure the delivery of emergency humanitarian aid for the population affected by the ongoing cold snap in the province of Ouarzazate.
The campaign is in line with measures put in place at the instruction of King Mohammed VI, who has recently ordered the government to intensify aid operations to help people affected by the heavy snowfall and cold weather in the region, the foundation said on Sunday evening.
The humanitarian aid disturbed in the province includes food products and blankets, as well as social support and local medical care.
Head of the project development division at the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity Abderrahman Saber said that the campaign started successfully as 405 families from six areas in the municipality of Amerzgane benefited from the aid.
Saber also expressed gratitude to all stakeholders who collaborated towards the successful campaign, recalling that 75 areas affected by snowfall and the cold snap will benefit from the emergency aid.
Heavy snowfall left many people trapped in their homes and unable to leave their region.
Following weather alerts forecasting a cold snap, the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity launched humanitarian aid, which is targeting 9,000 families from different small villages across the province.
Aircraft from Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces (FAR) have also been mobilized to assist the campaign.
On Sunday, the Ministry of Health said that a FAR medical helicopter helped a woman in labor in the province to travel to a hospital in Ouarzazate. The woman was stranded in a snow-besieged area.
The Health Ministry also announced that health personnel along with public services, like the Ministry of Interior, Royal Armed Forces, royal gendarmerie as well as security services are involved in the campaign to provide all needed services to the population who suffer from the harsh weather in mountainous areas.
