Rabat – Infamous singer Saad Lamjarred is expected to appeal his 6-year conviction in which he was sentenced for raping and beating French woman Laura Prioul.
On Friday, a French court in Paris sentenced the singer after he was found guilty of aggravated rape against Prioul.
Moroccan news outlet Le360 quoted a source close to Lamjarred, who said that the singer has decided to appeal the sentence.
Lamjarred is set to appeal the court’s decision on Monday, the source added.
Throughout the trial, the singer maintained his innocence, claiming that he had “never penetrated her.” He, however, acknowledged that he “pushed” Prioul away.
“I am not saying she is lying, but maybe she is wrong,” he said during his statement.
During the verdict, the court announced that the singer has 10 days to appeal the conviction. Lamjarred’s sentencing made international headlines and divided public opinion.
While some of the singers’ fans supported Lamjarred, others celebrated the court’s ruling.
Many have also denounced support campaigns in favor of Lamjarred, questioning how a “convicted rapist” could receive support.
Singers, actors, and actresses have joined the support campaign, and expressed solidarity with the singer’s parents.
Lamjarred is the son of Nezha Regragui, a renowned Moroccan actress and comedian, his father is Bachir Abdou, a famous singer and actor.
During the trial, Lamjarred received several questions about his childhood. When asked whether he had a troubled childhood, Lamjarred stressed that his upbringing was normal.
“My mother is a comedian, she always made me laugh,” he said.
It remains to be seen whether the French judiciary will accept the singer’s appeal.
