Rabat – A man stabbed two women to death and injured others with a large knife, today, March 28, at an Ismaili Muslim center in Lisbon, Portugal.
The Associated Press reported that the suspect is an Afghan refugee receiving assistance from the Ismaili Community, the women he attacked were Portuguese staff members at the center.
The police shot the suspect in the leg when he refused to surrender. He was then detained and taken to the hospital.
Portugal’s Minister of Internal Administration Jose Luis Carneiro said that: “They are closely monitoring developments and maintain constant contact with other branches of government.”
In the context of the investigation, he added, “the circumstances and motivations are currently being investigated, with preliminary evidence pointing to an isolated incident.”

The minister also expressed his solidarity and condolences to the families of the victims of today’s attack on the Ismaili center.
According to Portuguese television channel RTP, the Afghan suspect– a widower– had three children and was desperately looking for work.
President of the Afghan community in Portugal Omed Taheri told RTP that the attack was an isolated incident because the suspect had been exhibiting signs of psychological problems since arriving in Portugal.
Portuguese Public Security Police (PSP) urged people not to travel to the area where the incident took place due to the ongoing police operation.
