Rabat – Morocco’s Health Ministry sacked this week the director of a provincial hospital center in Youssoufia, a town in the Marrakech-Safi province, after a video went viral of a woman giving birth in the hospital’s garden.
The disturbing video shocked Moroccan social media users, as the woman was filmed giving birth in the medical establishment’s garden.
The ministry also launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of the case, which took place at Princess Lalla Hasnaa’s provincial hospital center.
A ministry source said that the inspection commission consists of the inspector general of the ministry, a central director, two central inspectors, as well as the regional health director of the Marrakech-Safi region.
“Pending the results of the investigation, the current director of the provincial hospital center has been dismissed by the Minister of Health,” the source added.
Several similar incidents took place in Morocco, highlighting evident dysfunctions in the country’s health sector.
In 2019, a video of a woman giving birth in the streets of Fez shocked Moroccan social media users.
A new report from the Arab Barometer said that as little as 23% of Moroccans are “completely satisfied with the health system” in 2022. The number is below the Middle East and North African average.
About 39% of people with a higher income are more satisfied with the country’s healthcare system, compared to 12% of Moroccans whose income cannot cover expenses.
Whereas urban area citizens reported being slightly satisfied with the healthcare system (26%) compared to as little as 18% of those who live in rural areas.
