Rabat – As the President of the National Union of Moroccan Women (UNFM), Morocco’s princess Lalla Meryem chaired on Wednesday a ceremony celebrating International Women’s Day,  the global holiday commemorated on March 8 every year.

During the event, Lalla Meryem signed two partnership agreements related to “fighting against sexual harassment in the public and private professional and economic sphere.”

The agreements also seek to improve women’s working conditions in both rural and urban areas. They are equally aimed at combating sexual harassment through “technological innovation and proximity work.”

As part of the ceremony, the Moroccan princess awarded the “Lalla Meryem Prize for Innovation and Excellence” to three women holders of innovative projects. The three winners come from pre-urban and rural areas.

The Lalla Meryem Prize celebrates Moroccan women aged between 20 and 40 who have developed innovative projects with the aim of creating positive social change. The winners receive support for their project, as well as training in soft skills.

Lalla Meryem has established an annual tradition of celebrating International Women’s Day, reiterating her commitment to advocating for gender equality and women empowerment, as well as fighting against sexism and gender-based violence.

Besides International Women’s Day celebrations, the Moroccan princess has launched several initiatives for the benefit of Moroccan girls and women. In 2020, the UNFFM launched the “Kolonamaak” (We are all with you) digital platform for women and girls victims of violence.

Kolonamaak aims to facilitate the reporting of violence and direct victims to competent authorities. The platform offers 24/7 support and guidance service.

In addition, Lalla Meryem has been committed to protecting girls’ rights to education. As part of the “Lalla Meryem Scholarships,” the Moroccan princess gives out scholarships to girls in secondary schools and to high school graduates coming from underprivileged backgrounds, notably rural areas.
