Rabat – Reda Bennani, a 16-year-old Moroccan tennis player, has received a “wild card” to participate in the professional tennis tournament Madrid Open, a first for Moroccan tennis given the athlete’s young age.
In tennis, a wild card is an invitation into a tournament granted to a player who would not otherwise qualify for the event due to their ranking or other qualifications.
The young Moroccan talent produced a remarkable performance at the 37th edition of the Grand Prix Hassan II, which took place in early April in Marrakech, qualifying for the tournament’s final round.
Bennani has also won the African championship of Under-18 in the men’s category, which took place in February in Egypt.
Born in 2007 in the Moroccan city of Casablanca, Bennani currently ranks 35th in the World Tennis Tour Junior Ranking.
The Madrid Open, also known as Madrid Masters 1000, is a professional men’s tennis tournament that is part of the ATP Tour Masters 1000 series. The annual sporting event will take place in Madrid, Spain, between April 24 and May 7.
The event attracts thousands of tennis enthusiasts from different corners of the globe who gather to witness some of the world’s best players battle it out for the prestigious championship.
Since its inaugural edition in 2002, the tournament has built a rich legacy and showcased remarkable tennis players, including Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray.
