Rabat – Morocco’s efforts on the anti-terrorism front, and its commitment to human rights makes it “indispensable” to international order, Canadian Senator, George F. Furey said in a statement to the press in Rabat on Wednesday following a meeting with Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Nasser Bourita.
Speaking in a press conference, Furey hailed the multiple reforms Morocco carried out during the reign of King Mohammed VI to bring prosperity, inclusiveness, and sustainability to Morocco.
Noting the state of relations between Morocco and Canada, Furey explained that bilateral trade between the two countries continues to grow, particularly in the sectors of agriculture, aerospace, education, infrastructure, and green technology.
Established in 1962, relations between the two countries have continued to develop and extend to many areas, including the economy as well as in the fight against terrorism, gender equality, and inclusive prosperity, said Furey The senator further highlighted the important contribution of the Moroccan community -over 100,000 people- established in Canada, describing it as “very dynamic.”
He added that Morocco’s close ties to Europe and Africa, and its strategic location can serve as a hub for Canadian companies looking to do business in Africa, just as Canada offers a bilingual gateway for Moroccan companies to the North American market.
The Canadian Senate is currently on a working visit to Morocco, leading a parliamentary delegation.
During this visit to Morocco, the Canadian delegation met with the President of the House of Representatives Rachid Talbi Alami, and the President of the House of Councillors Enaam Mayara.
Morocco-Canada relation
Morocco is currently Canada’s fifth-largest trading partner in Africa, with trade growing at an annual rate of 10%.
Morocco is also a top tourist destination for Canadians, with 130,000 Canadian tourists visiting Morocco in 2019.
In recent years, the two countries have made significant strides toward boosting bilateral collaboration across multiple fields. In 2022, the two countries celebrated the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties.
On the Western Sahara dispute, Canada acknowledges Morocco’s serious and credible efforts to reach a peaceful resolution.
Canada joins the UN Security Council in supporting Morocco’s efforts to find a mutually beneficial and agreed-upon solution to the conflict.
