Rabat – US President Joe Biden has officially announced his 2024 re-election campaign, bidding to secure the US presidency for the second time following his election in 2020.
Biden launched his campaign through a three-minute video today, pledging commitment to promoting freedom and equality.
“Freedom. Personal freedom is fundamental to who we are as Americans. There’s nothing more important. Nothing more sacred. That’s been the work of my first term. To fight for our democracy,” said Biden in the first 21 seconds of the video.
He went on to challenge former US President Donald Trump and his army of“Maga extremists,” accusing them of threatening the country’s essential values, including freedom and democracy.
Maga refers to “Make America Great Again,” the slogan that won Trump the 2016 election.
Trump, who has continued to challenge the results of the elections he lost to Biden in 2020, launched his 2024 reelection campaign in November 2022.
“In order to make America great and glorious again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,” Trump said last year.
The 2024 elections look to hold the prospect of a heated, much-anticipated rematch between Biden and Trump. The pair’s first confrontation concluded with Biden having the better of then-President Trump on November 7, 2020.
Biden, who is now 80, was elected as the 46th president of the US at the age of 77, making him the oldest man ever sworn as America’s president. He won with over 74 million votes, breaking the record number of votes registered by President Barack Obama in 2012.
Meanwhile, Trump received over 70 million votes, far above the 63 million votes he received in 2016 when he defeated Hillary Clinton.
The votes secured by Trump during the 2020 elections campaign suggested that the former US president still enjoys popularity and support from millions of Americans.
With many expecting Trump to win the Republican nomination, it remains to be seen whether the former president will have his revenge against his nemesis in the 2024 elections.
