Cape Verde Reiterates Firm Support for Morocco’s Territorial Integrity

Rabat – Cape Verde has once again voiced its unwavering support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, describing the Moroccan autonomy plan as the only “realistic” and “credible solution” to the ongoing territorial dispute.

This affirmation of support comes shortly after Cape Verde’s foreign minister, Rui Alberto De Figueiredo Soares’s visit to Morocco. During the visit, Soares reiterated his country’s embrace of the Moroccan autonomy plan, reinforcing Praia’s steadfast position in favor of Rabat.

Cape Verde emphasized its stance again in a statement today, underscoring its endorsement of the United Nations-led political process as the sole framework for achieving a politically negotiated, realistic, and sustainable resolution to the Sahara dispute.

“The Government of Cape Verde also reaffirms the Republic of Cabo Verde’s support for the search for a lasting solution that safeguards the territorial integrity of the Kingdom, under the exclusive auspices of the United Nations and in accordance with Decision 693 of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) in July 2018,” explained the statement.

Earlier this month, Morocco and Cape Verde signed nine bilateral agreements covering a wide range of areas in an effort to strengthen their bilateral cooperation.

The country further demonstrated its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the disputed region when it opened a consulate in Dakhla in August 2022.

Morocco’s pursuit of support in the long-standing Sahara conflict has gained significant momentum as more countries rally behind its autonomy initiative.

Cape Verde’s constant expression of support for Morocco puts it on a growing list of nations that view the Moroccan autonomy proposal as the most promising pathway towards a sustainable and realistic politically negotiated resolution to the dispute over Western Sahara.

On Monday this week, Ukraine added to this growing chorus of support by expressing its backing for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, recognizing it as a serious and credible framework to bring an end to the Western Sahara conflict.

Earlier this month, the Republic of Guinea also reiterated its strong support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.

The list of countries endorsing Morocco’s autonomy proposal continues to expand, with notable supporters including the United States, Sierra Leone, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands, among many others.

This growing international backing underscores the perceived viability and legitimacy of Morocco’s approach to addressing the complex issue of Western Sahara.
