Morocco Bags Seven Medals at African Weightlifting Championship

The Moroccan national weightlifting team has distinguished itself at the 22nd edition of the African Championship, clinching two gold medals, three silver medals, and two bronze medals.

Rabat – The Moroccan national weightlifting team has distinguished itself at the 22nd edition of the  African Championship, clinching two gold medals, three silver medals, and two bronze medals.

Morocco participated in the continental tournament with eight weightlifters, including three women, all of which have qualified for the next Olympics Games which will take place in Paris in 2024.

Moroccan weightlifter Maha Fajr won two gold medals and a silver medal in the 49 kilograms category.

During the championship, several Moroccan athletes broke national records, including Fajr who broke Morocco’s records in her category by lifting 64 kilograms in the Snatch style and 78 kilograms in the Clean and Jerk style.

Meanwhile, Bilal Bouamer, who competed in the +109 kilograms category, won two silver medals and a bronze one. 

He broke the national record in his weight category after lifting 154 kilograms in the Snatch style and 186 kilograms in the Clean and Jerk style.

In addition, Echaibia Echaachoui won a bronze medal in the 59 kilograms category, and also broke the national record in her category by successfully lifting 77 kilograms in the Snatch style and 91 kilograms in the Clean and Jerk.

Other Moroccan weightlifters who have distinguished themselves at the event and set new records include Sarid Alioua (89 kilograms) and Rokaya Sabihi (87 kilograms).

In a statement to Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP), the Technical Director of the Royal Moroccan Federation of Weightlifting Mohammed Nouhassi expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance.   

Describing the Moroccan team’s participation as “successful,” Nouhassi lauded the efforts of coaches Nabil Benabdeslem and Nouri Mohammed for having contributed to this success.

The 2023 African Weightlifting Championship took place at the Hamadi Ben Ammar in La Goulette, Tunisia between May 14 and 18. The tournament saw the participation of more than 120 weightlifters from 21 countries.
