Rabat – A bus overturned in the Spanish province of Huelva today, killing a 40-year-old Moroccan seasonal worker and injuring 24 others, seven of whom are in a critical condition, according to the consulate general of Morocco in Seville.
The bus carrying the Moroccan seasonal workers overturned on the A-484 road in the municipality of Almonte around 06:25 a.m., and an investigation has been launched to investigate the circumstances of the tragedy.
According to provisional data, 34 seasonal employees were on board the bus; one of them — a woman — was killed in the accident, while seven others were critically injured.
The injured seasonal workers were taken to hospitals in Huelva and Seville.
The Moroccan consul general in Seville, Abbah Sidi Sidi, visited the hospital in Huelva to check the victims while the services of the Moroccan Consulate General in Seville took all the necessary measures to repatriate the body of the Moroccan woman who died in the accident.
The Consulate General of Morocco in Seville, in coordination with the Moroccan Embassy in Spain, has set up a crisis cell to closely monitor the situation of the injured and provide them with the necessary assistance.
Every year, Moroccan seasonal migrants go to Spain to work in the country’s industrial, agricultural, and service sectors. This is made feasible by a 2001 agreement between Morocco and Spain that permits seasonal employees to gather fruit in Spain on temporary visas.
In September 2022, the Spanish province of Huelva, one of Europe’s top strawberry producers, announced plans to hire 11,000 Moroccan women for the harvest season.
