Rabat -The open-ended Arab Ministerial Committee in Support of the State of Palestine has made a strong plea for international action to recognize the State of Palestine and help it become a full-fledged member of the UN.
The committee–which counts Morocco among its members– emphasized the importance of international recognition to strengthen Palestine’s legal and global standing and assert its independence and sovereignty over its occupied land.
The committee proposed a plan of action today to facilitate the recognition process. They called on the general secretariat of the League of Arab States to instruct its missions abroad, along with Arab ambassadors’ councils, to engage with countries that have not yet recognized Palestine.
The objective is to encourage these nations to officially recognize Palestine and extend their support for its full membership at the United Nations.
Additionally, the committee urged the general secretariat of the League of Arab States to maintain communication with regional organizations such as the European Union, the African Union, and the Non-Aligned Movement, with the aim of persuading these organizations to invite their member countries, which have not yet recognized Palestine, to do so and support its full UN membership.
The committee’s unwavering support for Palestine underscores the significance of joining international organizations to strengthen Palestine’s legal and international status.
Recognition and support from the global community would provide Palestine with a stronger platform to assert its rights and aspirations.
In September 2022, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas reiterated his appeal for the State of Palestine to become a full-fledged member of the UN.
“Palestine, the Observer State in this Organization for 10 years now has proved that it qualifies for full membership. You have all recognized this,” he said, citing contributions that include chairing the G-77 and China developing country coalition.
He continued, “We are the exception. We are the only ones in the world on whom double standards are being applied.”
Earlier this week, the UN officially commemorated for the first time the anniversary of the Nakba, also known as the “Palestinian Catastrophe”, where numerous Palestinians were forcibly expelled from their homeland and thousands lost their lives.
Abbas spoke at the commemoration, urging the UN to restore the rights of his people and establish May 15 as an international day to commemorate their plight.
Amid these developments, Morocco reaffirmed its support for the Palestinian cause, with government spokesperson Mustapha Baitas underscoring the country’s unwavering position in favor of an independent Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem serving as its capital. The Moroccan government emphasized the clarity and consistency of its stance on the issue.
