Rabat – Morocco’s Tanger Med Port has taken the fourth top position in the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI).

With 193.48 points, the Moroccan port positioned itself among the four ports that topped the 2022 index.

Compiled by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, the report aims to establish itself as a reference for stakeholders in the global economy as well as port authorities and operators.

In addition to Morocco’s Tanger Med Port,  the UAE’s Khalifa Port comes third place, while China’s Yangshan port tops the list, followed by Oman’s Salalah.

With its fourth position in this global ranking, Tanger Med is outperforming several ports in the MENA region, as well as in Europe and North America.

Spain’s Algiciras ranked 16th in the 2022 index, followed by King Abdullah Port of Jordan, and Singapore Port.

According to the World Bank, the index is part of efforts to “improve terminals or a port that will ultimately benefit all public and private stakeholders.”

The index ranks 348 global container ports, measuring their efficiency in providing services.

Tanger Med Port featured in several reports, stressing its potential as one of the world’s most efficient ports.

In 2022, Priceconomies ranked Tanger Med as the third most efficient container port in the world as well as the first efficient African and Arab port.

The ports, which are among the busiest in Africa and the Mediterranean, raised concerns for many, including Spanish ports.

Tanger Med port is located on the Strait of Gibraltar, the world’s second-largest trade gateway. With its location, the port ensures direct access to major markets, including East, West, and North and South shipping lines.

The port has a handling capacity of 9 million twenty-foot equivalent unit  (TEU) containers. It also allows connectivity to 180 ports and 70 countries.

In 2022, the port processed a total tonnage of 107,822,662 tonnes indicating a 6% increase compared to 2021.
