New York Times Names Marrakech Among World’s Great Cities for Walks

Rabat – The New York Times has featured Morocco’s red city, Marrakech, among the world’s seven greatest cities for walks.

The renowned magazine sought recommendations from writers worldwide for immersive routes that capture the essence of a place at one’s own pace, and Marrakech stood out as a remarkable destination.

Titled “Marrakesh: A Spider Web of Passageways,” the article praised the city’s tourism assets, with a special emphasis on the Jemaa El Fna square, a bustling open-air market nestled within the ancient medina.

Described as a “carnivalesque, open-air market,” the public square allures visitors with its lively ambiance filled with juice stands, restaurants, souvenir shops, musicians, and performers, the magazine noted.

The market’s vibrancy and historical significance make it an unmissable attraction for anyone exploring Marrakech.

To embark on this enchanting journey through the city, NYT advised travelers to prepare with water and sunscreen, as they would embark on a meandering 2.2-mile walk.

Marrakech’s inclusion in the list is another testament to its status as a prominent tourist destination. The city has recently been featured in Vogue’s compilation of “best winter sun” destinations for 2023.

In January 2023, the red city was voted the eighth-best city for tourists in TripAdvisor’s Most Popular Tourist Destinations for 2023.

Every year, tourists flock to the city to immerse themselves in its unique culture and explore its countless attractions.

Recent data from Marrakech’s Regional Tourism Delegation indicates a staggering 63% increase in tourist arrivals during May compared to the same period in 2019, further attesting to the city’s rising popularity.
