Dubai – Moroccan startup Douar Tech was amongst the 15 Northern regional winners of the Global Startup Awards (GSA) Africa 2022/23, winning the category of “Diversity Role Model of the Year.”
The winners were announced at GITEX Africa 2023 which took place in Marrakech last week, in what was seen by the cofounder and announcer of GSA Caitlin Nash as a “significant move in strategically selecting Morocco as the host country given the winners representing the best startups of their home countries and region.”
Douar Tech is a Moroccan association that aims to empower and strengthen the skills of vulnerable members of society including the youth, women, and those living in rural and peri-urban areas.
Prioritizing entrepreneurship training, web development, and technological comprehensive skills, the association employs blended learning models as well as networking initiatives through its entrepreneurial ecosystem.
The Douar Tech empowerment model has successfully contributed to the inclusion of the Moroccan youth in the socio-economic sphere. It has also extended its efforts to encompass the African continent.
GITEX Africa is the first international venture of the GITEX conference, which has been organized in Dubai since 1981.
With the goal of realizing the adoption of next-gen technology in Africa, the event brought together regional and global leaders in both the public and private sectors to discuss new venues for cooperation.
GSA Africa is a platform that was launched in 2021 to spotlight promising African startups and guide them to opportunities at showcasing their solutions. It is considered the largest independent startup platform in Africa.
GSA’s fields of interest this year focused on solutions in agriculture, climate change, commerce, education, healthcare, and mobility & logistics.
Startups proposing and utilizing Web 3.0 technologies, sustainable business models, green innovation, and diversity in the workplace also sparked interest.
This year’s competition witnessed the participation of all 54 African states with 71 regional winners, including 15 North African winners from Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia. The winners are set to compete in Continental finals and join the GSA Grand Finale.
Winners will receive access to work with the Global Innovation Initiative Group (GIIG), the competition’s investment partner which aims to fund and grow African solutions to address contemporary global challenges.
This opportunity was an “encouragement for building and better connecting the African ecosystem which has more talent than support,” CEO of Remooz, the region’s “Best Web 3.0 startup,” Marwan Salem said.
“From Algeria to Mauritania, startups like Hiryo, Tile Green, and Bonbell are proof that Africa is the tech continent of the future” Jo Griffiths co-founder of GSA Africa and GIIG reassures.
